- Software engineering roles are moving from code production to code orchestration, according to a study of almost 3 million engineering and data job descriptions by Draup. As AI automates routine tasks, companies are hiring for senior technical roles requiring system-level thinking and judgment, the market data platform provider found.
- The analysis revealed that debugging, systems design and distributed systems are the most in-demand software engineering skills. For the channel, that means value is moving up the stack as routine development, configuration, deployment and monitoring become faster and more automated, Vishnu Shankar, Chief Data Officer at Draup, told Channel Dive.
- “As that happens, execution alone will become harder to differentiate and more susceptible to margin pressure,” Shankar said in an email. “The partners that create the most value will be those that can help customers make complex decisions — how to modernize an environment, where to introduce AI, how to integrate it securely and who remains accountable for the outcome.”

AI talent is predictably a hot commodity, according to Draup. Machine learning engineers now earn the highest median salary at $166,764, while proficiency in AI coding tools like Github Copilot is a must, the research found.
As companies deploy AI tools and software engineers focus on systems over routine coding, building guardrails has become a priority.
In the age of AI, partners will need to focus on IT architecture, modernization, security, governance, reliability and continuous optimization, Shankar said.
“When AI reduces the effort required to complete a task, customers will increasingly evaluate partners based on the risk they reduce and the outcomes they enable rather than the number of hours they bill,” he said.
Risk is an ongoing challenge for organizations implementing AI.
Sauce Labs reported that 80% of organizations have already traced a production incident, outage or customer-impacting defect directly to AI-generated code. The software testing company surveyed 400 engineering leaders and found that 65% suffered a quality incident last year that cost $500,000-plus, and 38% lost a major customer to a software defect, per the research.
Partners should consider risks as well as trends in software engineering hiring as they build their teams.
“Demand is moving toward professionals who can combine technical depth with architectural thinking, domain knowledge and business context,” Shankar said. “Partners will need more talent capable of working across security, cloud, data and AI rather than completing a narrowly defined technical task.”
Shankar cautioned that creating opportunities for junior employees, whose roles are being automated, is essential.
“If partners remove that work without creating a new development model, they risk weakening the pipeline of future senior talent,” he said. “Early-career employees will need more deliberate exposure to system design, customer problems, technical review and decision-making.”
